Tom McEvoy: Poker Is About More Than Luck. |
 | |
His name – one of the most famous in poker world. Though he’s more known for his books than for his game. He had won at the WSOP only once, but wrote 11 books about how to do it!
Tom McEvoy’s story is like many others. He wasn’t going to become a poker player… and so on… and so forth… nothing special. He began playing poker when he was 5 years old. When at school he played with his schoolmates on their lunch money. Of course, their parents were unpleased with that… but as once Tom’s mother had said: “If little Johnny (Tom’s friend) is dumb enough to lose his money there is nothing I can do about it”.
Tom’s poker education included reading books. He had read every poker book he could find: “Even the really awful ones have something to offer, I try to take at least one really good idea or concept away from every book I read. The first poker book I read was Dolly Brunson’s “Super System” back when it was called “How to win 1,000,000 playing poker”.
Las Vegas greeted Tom McEvoy in 1979 with outstretched arms proving that poker will give Tom more money than any other work. One 5-10 game could bring him amount of money bigger than President of the company had.
Four years in Vegas and Tom became a World Champion. It brought him a title and $540,000, this was a good source of revenue but not stable. And he found then another one: I mean writing book. He had already written about 10 books (more than any other player had ever written). And many others are in the pipeline. His books are considered to be required reading for every poker player who wants to win.
What else is significant about Tom McEvoy? His role in making tournaments non-smoking. The first-ever in Nevada non-smoking tournament was held in 1999. And in 2002 was held the first non-smoking WSOP. These tournaments don’t force players to give smoking… it’s all about respecting your opponents. You may want to look like Sam Farha, but do it without smoking. Not everybody can bear it. I like Tom’s words ”The addiction to poker is greater then the addiction to smoking”.
It’s true. Poker can be a life work as it is for Tom McEvoy. He even was a columnist in Card Player magazine. This work lasted for eight years. Now Tom has his own website, where he publish articles as a Poker Professor. I think that’s right. He can be considered a Professor of that game. Like a professor in the University: he teaches his students to PLAY and writes books about it, the best ones.
