Phil Hellmuth: The Level Of Frustration Involved With Going Broke Is Incredible
Phil Hellmuth is considered to be the most successful tournament poker player. But he is also known as a poker brat, a whiner. He likes to win but hates to lose. Of course, we all hate to lose, but the question is – how we behave after that. Hellmuth is fond of whining. Being one of the best poker players in the world he still talks about the bad times: “The level of frustration involved with going broke is incredible. Now being able to pay the bills or even ante up in a poker game is tragic for a great poker player. Being a champion is all about how you deal with the bad times”. Anyway I hope he will be remembered for his wins – not for his whines.
Yes, for his wins, Phil Hellmuth won at the WSOP in 1989. He was only 24 years old – the youngest WSOP winner ever. So, it took only 4 years to become the best. And again when he talks about his championship he can’t help complaining: “In what other profession can you be at the top and have so many unsatisfying moments?” Maybe he means that getting his nine bracelets is unsatisfying moment?
He is the third man (others are Johnny Chan) who managed to earn 9 gold bracelets. The list of his WSOP wins is one of the greatest:
1) 1989 – NL Holdem (Championship Event) – 1st place 2) 1992 – Limit Holdem – 1st place 3) 1993 – Limit Holdem – 1st place 4) 1993 – NL Holdem ($1.5K) – 1st place 5) 1993 – NL Holdem ($3K) – 1st place 6) 1997 – PL Holdem – 1st place 7) 2001 – NL Holdem – 1st place 8) 2001 – NL Holdem (Championship Event) – 5th place 9) 2003 – Limit Holdem – 1st place
