Moneymaker, Moneymaker… everywhere… people just can’t stop talking about this guy. I wonder why do you read it? Don’t you know everything about him as yet? If you don’t – then you’re in the right place!
1. Is Chris Moneymaker his real name? Yes, it’s his real name – Christopher Brian Moneymaker: “…my ancestors were from Germany. At the time, people were named based on their professions. My family supposedly made silver and gold coins. Eventually, when coming to America, they took on the translation and that is how Moneymaker was derived”.
2. Did he invest only $40 to win $2.500.000? Yes, that’s true. When he was going to Las Vegas he even didn’t have enough money to pay for airfare and hotel. His father and his friend had to pay for him… His friend also has a very poker name – David Gamble…
3. Is poker his single source of revenue? No. He has even two jobs: the CFO and an accountant and he’s not going to leave them. He dreams of putting his daughter through college. I think it is really a sound investment.
4. How will he spend his money? Very logical question after the previous one. He’s not going to waste them. He had already donated $25,000 to cancer research. I don’t think he will do something like this again… but who knows?
5. How did he manage to win? According to his words… It was all about changing the strategy. At first he was playing too scared but when he had found where the shoe pinches… he had cardinally changed his style of play. He promised himself to be fearless. And on the forth day at the final table he did his best. His Online poker experience helped him to count his chances: “I’ve played lots of heads-up matches on the Internet, so I knew which hands can win at heads-up play. I was lucky to flop two pair when Sammy had top pair on the final hand. I’m still in shock.”
6. Was he impressed by any other players except himself? Yes… And Scotty Nguyen.
7. What is his winning secret? The secret is very simple if it is a secret: “Find a style that works for you. Mix it up and fo what you are comfortable with. You don’t need to bluff a lot if it makes you uncomfortable. Make sure you have a flexible game plan”.
Hope we’ll see Chris at the WSOP-2005 competing with Greg Raymer (2004 WSOP-winner) for the pot in no-limit Texas hold’em Championship.
